Mikalojus Daukša- one of the progenitors of Lithuanian literature and a great contributor to the development of the Lithuanian literary language. He prepared two Lithuanian books which in 1595 and 1599 were published at the Vilnius University printing-house.

In 16- 17th cc. there were more than 10 printing- houses in Vilnius, which used to print 15- 20 books yearly in most popular languages in Lithuania at that, i.e. Latin, Polish and Lithuanian.

In 1539 Abraomas Kulvietis founded a school of further education in Vilnius and was in charge of it. Other progenitors of literature also taught in that school: Stanislovas Rapalionis, Martynas Mažvydas and Jurgis Zablockis (~1510-1563).

On November 11, 1673, near Chocim (Ukraine), Lithuanian and Polish military units defeated the Turkish army. In this battle rockets of Kazimieras Simonavičius were successfully used.

Juozas Lukoševičius (1863-1928), a physicist, mineralogist. Continuing development of K. Simonavičius' ideas, he argued that the Moon could be reached by means of a rocket only. He was the first in the world to describe peculiarities of human weightlessness. He calculated the velocities necessary to overcome the gravity of the Earth. His calculations were confirmed after launching first satellites of the Earth. He was a founder and the rector of the Petersburg Institute of Geography.

Aleksandras Griškevičius progenitor of aviation in Lithuania. In 1851 in Kaunas he published the book "The Samogitian Steam Flying Machine". In 1855-1862 he constructed flying machines and successfully tested them.

Jurgis Dobkevičius, constructor of Lithuanian planes, aviator. He died while he was testing a plane "Dobi III". Antanas Gustaitis, an engineer of Lithuanian aviator, constructor, general, aviator. He designed multi-purpose "Anbo" planes. He established a plane factory in Kaunas and was in charge of it. He was shot by Soviets.

The Faculty of Natural of Sciences of Vilnius University covered all principal natural sciences. Its founder J.E.Gilibert introduced botany, mineralogy and zoology. J. Pabrėža was a creator of botanical terminology, as well as a compiler of botanical dictionaries. S.B.Jundzilas, a naturalist and materialist, enlightener J.G.A.Forster introduced the science of palaeontology, he was a participant of the expedition around the world lead by James Cooke.

E.C.Eichwald, professor of zoology, and comparative anatomy at Vilnius Medical Surgery Academy. In his work Zoologia specialis he proposed a theory of evolution of living nature 30 years before Darwin.
